Milton Cottage is a delightful traditional thatched cottage tucked away down a little lane on the outskirts of South Milton village, which is situated between the local villages of Thurlestone and Hope Cove, and the local market towns of Kingsbridge and Salcombe. Milton Cottage is a perfect retreat for those wanting to be away from the hustle and bustle yet all amenities are only a short drive away. Set in a secluded plot, Milton Cottage has a lovely big garden, ideal for kids to play in or for the dogs to stretch their legs. There is also plenty of parking for 3 cars. The cottage dates back to the 16th century and boasts a wealth of period features including large inglenook fireplaces, traditional stone walls, beams and sloping floors. It is worth noting that ceiling and door heights vary throughout the cottage so anyone over 6ft tall will have to keep their wits to avoid a bump to the head. There are also many small steps throughout the property but all this adds to the character and history of the cottage.
You enter the cottage via a lovely stone utility/porch area with plenty of space for boots, coats and dog beds. This leads through to the large sitting and dining room, traditionally furnished with comfortable period furniture. The country kitchen is well equipped with everything you should need for a self catering holiday, ideal for family holidays. There is a double oven with a warming drawer, fridge freezer, the hob sits in a feature inglenook, pantry, dishwasher and microwave. The kitchen table seats 4 comfortably or you can dine in the majestic dining room where there is a large ornate table to seat 8.
Out the back overlooking the country garden is the conservatory. This benefits from the sun for most of the day and is ideal for relaxing, taking a coffee and reading a book. The French doors open up onto the sunny patio, idea for alfresco dining.
Upstairs there is a large corridor with many traditional local pictures depicting the history of the local area. The main bedroom has a kingsize bed and low level cottage window overlooking the back garden. The second beamed bedroom has a double bed and there is a twin bedroom with an under eaves wardrobe. There is a tv in this bedroom so an ideal retreat for the children while the adults have their time down stairs.
Upstairs there is a separate toilet and shower room with heated towel rail, and downstairs the bathroom has a bath with shower over.
Milton Cottage is a suitable property for families or couples alike who wish for peace and tranquillity yet only a stones throw from all the local activity. Just a few minutes from the cottage are a wealth of footpaths to venture along, down through the valley or you can ramble on down to the coast on the South West Coastal Footpath for the more adventurous!
Milton Cottage is a short drive to South Milton Sands where you can hire kayaks and windsurfs or wine and dine at The Beach House – a laidback foodie destination on the cliff top. Other water sports such as stand up paddle boarding, surfing and sailing are also available close by at Bantham Beach. The Bantham Surfing Academy is also based here.
South Milton is just a short drive from the local market town of Kingsbridge with its bustling Fore Street with an eclectic, yet attractive mix of shop fronts, cafes and pubs. The nearby coastal towns of Salcombe and Dartmouth are lined with boutique shops, lifestyle brands, art galleries and gift shops – you can while the time away browsing through these towns.
What makes Milton Cottage so special – from the owner
I love the warm enveloping feeling I experience when I enter Milton Cottage. This has been my home from home for twenty years now and I love it in all seasons.
In Summer it is a haven of tranquillity to relax in the evening with an aperitif and enjoy the very verdant garden views. In cooler seasons the living area is warm and cosy and ideal to hibernate from any turbulent weather.
In addition the cottage is ideally placed to enjoy the local beaches, many local attractions and stunning coastal walks.
I hope visitors to Milton Cottage will enjoy it as much as my family and I have.
