Nestled in the coastal South Devon village of Bantham, this cosy period coastal rental is perfect for a large family trip away. Steeped in rich history, Cracklefield Cottage dates back to the 17th century. Cracklefield Cottage originated from the ancient deeds ‘Field of Crackle’. This coastal rental was once part of the adjoining Bantham House. Local historians suggest Cracklefield Cottage was one of many storage places for smuggled goods in the late 18th and early 19th century. Rumour has it, that all the Bantham villagers were holders of this secret, providing they received their share of the bounty!
Cracklefield Cottage is a quirky country coastal cottage. The farm-style décor brings the house to life, creating a feeling of comfort from top to bottom. On first appearance Cracklefield Cottage may seem small, however, do not be deceived, with a plethora of bedrooms and living areas, it generously accommodates eight guests.
The jewel in the crown of the sleeping arrangements is found in the upstairs master bedroom. This spacious king size bedroom boasts a built-in wardrobe, a chest of drawers, hand basin and reading chair overlooking the spectacular scenery of the South Hams rolling hills. This room is great for losing yourself in a book, from the Cracklefield Cottage bookshelf. Down the hallway, two washrooms are available; the first includes a shower, basin and toilet and the other, an overhead shower bath, basin and toilet. A laundry utility can be found in the upstairs cupboard. The clean and cosy second double bedroom is fully furnished with a hand basin, chest of draws and sloping ceilings. We love the dark nature of this room, especially throughout the night ensuring you have plenty of rest, so you awake fully energized ready to continue your holiday. The adjacent twin divan single bedroom is perfect for the kids. Overlooking the garden, this sloped ceiling bedroom is beautiful and bright. The fourth bedroom is found on level three. This brightly lit twin single bedroom is the perfect escape for kids. Accessed via a steep flight of stairs, this sloped ceiling Velux window room is great fun with a vast view of this Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
The open-plan kitchen diner is full of character. With an exposed beam, farmhouse table and decommissioned stonewall fireplace, this traditional countryside coastal kitchen truly has a warm feel. The clean and fresh kitchen comes fully equipped with crockery, fridge, freezer, microwave, built-in dishwasher, electric oven and ceramic hob. Perfect for cooking a family feast together. An additional toilet can be found at the bottom of the stairs just off the kitchen.
From the kitchen down a step, you are welcomed with a large lounge. Split into two seating areas, the lounge has comfy seating for all the family. A traditional wood burner set into the stonewalled fireplace is the perfect addition for those occasional rainy days found in Bantham or snug winter evenings. Something for every generation of the family, this social area includes, a bookshelf with different genre’s, a TV, DVD player and WiFi Internet.
Leading out the lounge, into the enclosed garden, you are met with a quaint raised lawn and bench seating area. Venturing past the garden back towards the kitchen, you will find a paved outdoor patio entertainment area. Cracklefield Cottage comes equipped with an outdoor dining set and barbecue, perfect for afternoon aperitifs and soaking up the final rays.
This coastal holiday property is based within walking distance from Bantham beach, the historical local pub and shop. Bantham is a great base for exploring the surround areas, especially with Salcombe only a 15-minute drive away. Thurlestone, Bigbury-on-Sea, Kingsbridge and Dartmouth offer many different activities and adventures. Cracklefield Cottage includes one off-road parking space. Additional cars will be required to park in the Bantham beach car park, providing a permit is obtained.
